Young women dominate UK net scene

Young women are now the most dominant group online in the UK, according to new research from net measurement firm Nielsen/NetRatings.

Women in the 18 – 34 age group account for 18% of all online Britons.

They also spend the most time online – accounting for 27% more of the total UK computer time than their male counterparts.

Interesting to note how this fairly unimportant statistic seems to be presented in such a triumphant way, with talk of women ‘dominating’ the ‘net, and also how they are taking on the ‘traditionally male dominated’ world of gaming. So? Big deal. Yet it seems that it’s another thing to get all excited about; “Woooh, cyber-empowering, grrrl power, etc.”

Whenever it is shown that men make up the majority of something – internet users, online gamers, etc – then there’s usually talk of how more women need to be encouraged to take part, that poor women are put off by the nasty men, etc.

I am calling this bullshit women seem to think men who play videogames are a joke and “immature” especially when you’re over 30+. Yet for some reason gaming has become more popular with women so it’s okay for them and “cool” but for men (guys like me who enjoy videogames) we are labelled as fucking geeks. Videogames is my hobby and will never be quitting.

The truth is most gamers are men and always will be and have been, most women aren’t proper gamers (the majority) and no the Nintendo Wii doesn’t count because it’s a fad that even 70 year olds play it isn’t for proper gamers. Most buyers who got a Wii were women.

As for women dominating the internet well women can’t help but take over everything these days I thank god that videogames are heavily developed by men and not women because women would frankly fuck up videogaming and making that all feministed as well.

that will start too. In fact, it already has. That Tomb Raiders thing is but one example. The inclusion of women in fighting games as if they have a chance vs. muscular men is another example. For example, I love Street Fighter, but there is no way in hell some cute asian chick (chun li) would be able to tke on any of the other character in the game (especially zangeif).

and many of these gaming companies (though they may not have female developers) have females working on the staff- and you know what that means: the chick will put her two cents on why there isn’t a kickass female in the game. The type of men most likely to be programming games AREN’T the most socially skilled people and so will likely have had none to little contact with females. The attention of the female staffers will get to them to include unrealistic characterizations of women in combat, etc. Plus that Equal Opportunity thing.

the gaming industry is still one of the last bastions where men can enjoy themselves without the hassling of women. BUT JUST WAIT- in some game, there will be some feminist character lecturing us men in the storylines of the games.

Games have already been feminised. A ‘for girls’ version of Harvest Moon has been released.’For girl’ versions of dating sim games. Barbie games. Nintendogs.

“Women in the 18-34 category are visiting a variety of sites including those dedicated to fashion, family and lifestyle issues.”

Not much variety, if you ask me.

All these stats show is that more women are indulging their usual limited range of interests by visiting the internet instead of via TV, women’s mags or yapping with their pals; and in time-honoured fashion, once they get started on reading and blogging about themselves and their vanity interests alongside similar-minded females, they just don’t stop.

So tell me something new.

what is up with that game Sims, anyway? You’re justing people walking around and in and out of buildings. BORING!! That’s about one of the gayest games I’ve ever seen. I knew this chick that would play that all day on her laptop while at work. That game sounds like peeping-Tomism to me.

The Legend of Zelda TP for Wii is a hardcore game, and Link is a positive male role model (although: are Luigi and Linkk gay?)

Many many prefer their game consoles to talking to their women folk, because one actually makes sense and is easy to understand.

BIG F-ing DEAL! Women dominate most conversations, but that doesn’t mean what they are saying is worth listening to. This whole business of women “dominating” the internet is exactly the same. I guess the author of that article doesn’t consider the signal-to-noise ratio of most of these females’ contributions to the net.

This is ABSOLUTELY true. Women rarely say something of substance. They love to talk about their number one favorite subject- THEMSELVES.

Even among my good females friends, they love dominating the convo and speaking of themselves.

It is pointless getting into a political or deep discussion with them. The think a statement like: “not all (insert) are like that…” is an argument. Or that “Well, I know many who…” is a great refutation against facts.

I am from the US, and while this is mostly true, I would have to say that when I went to Europe and Scandinavia in particular it is certainly not. I have meet many a Norweigian woman who knew more about american politics than I did….(not saying much hehehe) And I always ran into one with an opinion about the President and his warmongering, expansionistic policies (I cant think of the right word for a country that forces its ways on others).
